Celebrating the Departed

The 12th annual Dia De Los Muertos festival is a heartfelt tribute to honor those who have passed away, a sentiment that resonates deeply with both locals and visitors alike. Local artist Siren Corbett summed it up beautifully when she said, "It is to honor those who have passed us, those that we love."

The festival featured a delightful mix of cultural elements, from the captivating performances of Mi Mariachi Viva Mexico to the lowrider cruise through the streets. Denison's streets were transformed into a cultural melting pot, where Texomans gathered to savor delicious food, immerse themselves in beautiful music, and admire stunning vehicles at the car show.

Connecting with Art and Ancestry

One of the festival's highlights was the array of talented artists who used this special occasion to connect with the departed and each other in a unique and meaningful way. For me, aka The Wright Artist, this festival provided the perfect canvas to showcase my artistic talents.

Inspired by the spirit of Dia De Los Muertos, I brought my artistic vision to life with chalk. I meticulously crafted intricate and captivating chalk art, aiming to add a touch of elegance and storytelling to the festivities. My art became a medium through which attendees could connect with their own emotions and memories of loved ones who have passed away.

A Tribute Through Art

Among the artists at the festival, Siren Corbett, in addition to her live performances, painted a heartfelt tribute to her mother. Using a canvas she bought for her mother, Siren's live painting captured the emotions and sentiments that run deep during Dia De Los Muertos. Her art, like mine, became a poignant and personal connection to the festival's themes of remembrance and celebration.

The Dia De Los Muertos festival in Denison, Texas, serves as a beautiful reminder of the importance of honoring our departed loved ones and embracing diverse cultures. Artists like myself and my friends Carrie Taylor Dziabczenko and Santos Lozano play a vital role in adding depth and creativity to the celebration, allowing attendees to connect with their emotions and memories through the power of art. As the festival continues to thrive, we look forward to more artists contributing their unique talents and stories to this annual cultural extravaganza.
